-> As many who read my articles may already know about I am what could be called a true opera fan, as not only do I attend performances on a regular basis but have even written a book about the subject called "New York's Opera Society". A lot of my knowledge however about the subject started when I was a student at New York's Hunter College, it was there were I learned many things about music such as the four kinds of instruments, with the first being the human voice. In other words singing which all those who hear me know I have absolutely no talent for but yet it was this which came to be man's and woman's first instrument. It was after the voice was discovered for the purpose of making sounds of...

The flute is a woodwind instrument that is still widely popular even though it has been around for hundreds of years. The flute is the highest pitched instrument in most bands (especially beginner ones, as the piccolo is not always used), and it is made of metal. Unlike the other members of the woodwind family (the clarinet, the saxophone, etc) the flute does not utilize reeds. Rather, the sound is produced by pushing air through the cylindrical instrument. The proto-flute has been around for thousands of years - archeologists unearth bones with holes in them can be played very similar to a flute all the time. As of writing this article, every civilization past and present has some instrument that...

Why is he important? In the realm of jazz improvisation and the saxophone, John Coltrane's life and accomplishments are so monumental as to seem to be beyond the scope and constraint of time. Despite a relatively brief career (he first came to notice as a musician at age 29 in 1955, formally launched a solo career at 33 in 1960, and was dead at 40 in 1967), saxophonist John Coltrane is among the most important-and most controversial-figures in jazz. Since Coltrane was a multifaceted player who changed his style radically over the course of his career, it has made for much confusion in appreciations of his playing. There remains a critical divide between the adherents of his earlier, more...

Special consideration is given to many different people when it comes to the college admission process. There is one way we are going to talk about in this article that you can get special consideration, and that way is to play a musical instrument. If you are considering going to college and playing in the band, then there's a good chance that you can get a scholarship or grant money. If you have no plans on playing in the band, you can still get special consideration for playing an instrument, such as the saxophone or tuba. You want to show the college that your special talent is fairly unique. If you play a guitar or the drums, they will most likely not consider this very unique. If you play the...

Synthesizer is an instrument that helps to create and play different kinds of sounds. They require external sound boxes. This instrument has different kinds of models. The models vary on the basis of the functions, facilities, size etc. There are three main types of synthesizers, analogue, digital and software. In the analogue form, continuous voltages in different proportions model sound wave. Whereas in a digital synthesizer various separate information units are used. A software synthesizer makes use of various software to mix sounds. By assimilating these three types, a new kind of synthesizer is made, which is called hybrid synthesizer. There are different methods of synthesis. - Subtractive...

In every orchestra and formal concerts, the saxophone will always be present to provide relaxing music to its audience. If it's soothing experience that we are up to, then sax will be the best choice. Although the saxophone has been famous for its relaxing music and elegance, some people consider it monotonous. This is the biggest misconception of the sax music. Learning and listening to it can be fun too just the same way we feel towards the piano and guitar. Although learning how to play the saxophone is not that easy as compared to other wind instruments, the experience will surely motivate you to become successful in playing musical instruments. Apart from the great experience, playing the sax...

Richly talented Rock artist Robert Wyatt has released him latest album titled Comicopera and Wow! It's good. Unfortunately, it's not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can't force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Comicopera. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish. One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you've got one of Robert Wyatt's most impressive releases ever. If you're even...

This is the third book in a delightful series by the excellent author, Alexander McCall Smith; he also writes the brilliant 'No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency' series. This is comfort reading at its most enjoyable, and it gives you a warm cuddle as you join these favorite characters as they live their very different lives in the always interesting city of Edinburgh. It's like your top soap opera in book form, but with ironic humor thrown in. The insight to these various quirky Edinburgh characters is addictive. Our resident millionaire, Matthew, is taking control of his life and and now rather enjoying owning an art gallery. His love life is in focus in this book and he is depicted as a charming and...

Here is the golden rule of being a successful studio musician. You can choose to heed it or you can choose to ignore it. I'll tell you this though, if you choose to ignore this rule it won't really matter how great you are. *YOU MUST BE A PERSON THAT GETS ALONG WELL WITH OTHERS AND BRINGS POSITIVE ENERGY TO A SESSION AND THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN A SESSION. YOU MUST BE AN ENABLER!* I kid you not that all else is secondary. You can have all the chops and talent in the world but if you're disruptive, egotistical, arrogant, reactionary and if you generally diminish the flow and the energy in the room then you should start looking for another career! The best session musicians are a hybrid of talent, tools...

I can describe the latest release from Smooth Jazz sensation Boney James for you with just one word... Outstanding! Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish. Shine has a nicely varied, mix of 12 tracks that are very well put together by this clearly saxophone playing artist. The thing I enjoy about Boney James music is that it produces a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are his own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love...

The Fania All Stars made Salsa popular around the world in the 1970's. They could fill stadiums and arenas everywhere they went. They played a big part in the huge success Salsa enjoyed during the 1970's. Below I'll share with you my favorite Fania All Stars recordings, which I recommend you add to your music collection. Fania All Stars Early Live Recordings: The Fania All Stars early "live" recordings were some of their best work, with the exception of their forgettable very 1st recording, "Live at the Red Garter" (1968). Some people loved the uncontrolled jams that were recorded in the album, which includes probably the only appearances in the Fania All Stars by Tito Puente, and Eddie Palmieri...

With the advent of the Tamil month 'Margazhi', starts the music fever in the city of Chennai. Margazhi begins in the English month of December and goes well in to January. "Music is in the air" is the right phrase to describe this month as a large number of sabhas organize concerts by eminent musicians and sabha(concert) halls are packed with Carnatic Music fans. It all started in the year 1927, when the Madras Music Academy was opened. It was the Madras Music Academy that came with the idea of a month long musical season which is now famously known as the December Music Season. It is considered one of the world's largest Music Festival that allows the various musicians to showcase their talents...

If I was a betting man, I'd place a hefty wager on the fact that when any of he pop stars that rule and charts today kick the bucket, there would be little brouhaha other than perhaps a smallish obituary in the showbiz pages. Luckily I'm not, but as harsh as it may sound, today's pop stars are a largely forgettable lot, and few will be remembered 50 years from today. However, when I heard of Richard 'Rick' Wright's recent death, it seemed as if an era of popular music was coming to an end. Wright, a musician most renowned for his association with progressive rock giants Pink Floyd, was a quiet individual quite different from his rock star contemporaries. That seemed true both in his on and offstage...

One word describes the CD Unplugged from Maxwell... AWESOME! It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce that's exactly what I must say about this one. There simply isn't a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it's own. Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known guests that have been assembled to play along with Maxwell on several of the tracks. Artists like Gloria Agostini and Gerald Tarack just to name a couple. I'm of the opinion that Unplugged is certainly Maxwell's best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding...

In this Sonic Producer review, you are going to get to know more about this and the great beat producing program. Actually, my friend uses Sonic Producer software and he says that it lives up to the hype. So, I wanted to find if it really is true. After trying it out for a couple of days, I also agreed with my friend. It's way a lot easier in comparison with Fruity Loops. The only issue I did not like about was that it has no old classic notes. Besides that, it was one of the best beat making applications I have used. So now we will get deeper inside this Sonic Producer review. Simplicity wise It's incredibly easy to use. The note pads are seriously simple for you to use plus the lessons are plainly...

On Amazon there are 34,656 books about friendship. Half of these books are children's books. Clearly friendship is perceived as a kid thing and doesn't get the publicity that other relationships do (there are 92,769 books on Amazon about marriage). My favorite book about friendship is George and Martha: The Complete Stories of Two Best Friends by James Marshall. It's a children's book, of course, and the two characters are hippopotamuses. But I think even adults can learn a thing or two about friendship from George and Martha: 1. It's OK to be honest. George didn't have the courage to tell Martha he didn't care for her split pea soup but she found out and was happy to make him something he liked...

Cover Bands and Why We Love Them

A cover band is a music group that performs songs originally produced by other famous bands. Sometimes, they dress like the original band, take on their persona, and rock out like the classics. Some of them name their group as a spoof to the original and come up with creative names like Odyssey instead of Journey. Cover bands are different than a band covering a song from an original artist. Cover bands strictly perform the band they are trying to emulate. Some bands that are trying to make their way into the music industry will do a cover of a song from a more famous band, but rerecord it to make it sound like their own. Some cover bands choose the tops songs from a certain decade to perform. Rotel...

How to Learn Music Properly

I love talking to students about how they learn and how they practice music. Recently I've talked to students from different education systems from countries in Asia, Australasia, Europe and the Middle East, and found that students are fascinated with how learning occurs, and excited by the prospect of becoming better learners. Everyone likes learning (not necessarily school); the boost in self-esteem and self-growth are indeed one of life's great joys. We are born to learn. But I rarely observe a systematic approach within school music departments that address the 'how and why' of practice. Given that the majority of instrumental tuition is delivered by private providers, learning how to learn...

Cancun is not all about wild spring break parties and nonstop tequila competitions there are also plenty of romantic activities to do during your vacation. If you want to treat your partner to a bit of romance and a few glasses of wine under the stars then there are tours that can provide just that. You'll get to sail on the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, enjoying a few drinks and the incredible vista. You'll also have the chance to go snorkeling and see the multitude of marine life that lives below the waves on the world's second largest coral reef. A sure fire way...

I'm always amazed at how some musicians can come together, count-off a tune, and create music on the spot that really swings. How come some can do this yet others simply can't? Why is it that some music grooves a lot and some grooves less or not at all? While there may be a number of reasons to this problem, I'll focus on one of them in this article. "The beat" What is "the beat"? You may define it as: "A common denominator, in the form of a pulse, used by a group of musicians in order to be able to play music "together". Now, if the individual musicians of a band or ensemble have different pulses, or beats, how can they possibly be on the same page? Even if someone is loudly marking the beat for...

The 80's era served as the canvas. He then added an interesting blend of colors- red, white, and blue... yellow, green, and a slim line of black. On top, he sketched the unforgettable New York skyline- pre- September 11th, with the Twin Towers in tact. With the artwork complete, God said, "I think I'll name this piece King-I-Divine". Born to Guyanese and Panamanian parents, King-I-Divine entered the world by way of the Brooklyn borough as Sean L. Maxwell on January 27, 1982. Throughout his life, he relocated from Brooklyn to Queens, from Queens to Long Island; thus, New York City has always been considered home. The artists of the 80's and 90's sparked King-I-Divine's love for hip hop and R&B...

“The Do” are a French two-piece or duo indie band based in Paris. The Do were formed in 2007 and they are Dan Levy (Musician) and Olivia Merilahti (Vocals). Their music covers a wide variety of genres that include indie rock, indie pop, folk rock and a bit of electronic stuffs. A Mouthful has an album appetizer that everyone of us will definitely give at least a thumb-up to it. In “Playground Hustle”, a group of children cover most of the singing part while Olivia just adds in some extra weights here and there. The music in this track is exceptional as well. The flute on Playground Hustle reminds me of my younger days when i had to learn flute-playing in school. The music which is mainly...

Re-Learning to Play the Piano

This article is about a new musical product that I think every aspiring musician should know about. It’s called “Sheet Music On A Stick” and is a small USB memory drive that is filled with sheet music, audio files and a ton of interactive options that can make learning, or re-learning to play the piano  much easier than traditional books of sheet music. Like many others during their childhood I took piano lessons at the strong urging of my parents. After two years of such lessons the call of my friends on the baseball diamond meant the end of the lessons and shortly thereafter the end of playing the piano. Over the years I often thought how nice it would be to be able to play the piano again...

There are some fairly straightforward rules about performing at a wedding ceremony. If you've been asked and you're trying to make up your mind whether you'd like to have a role in this wedding, please consider the following: - Get clear who's choosing the pieces you will perform. Even if they want you to make the choices, it's in your best interest to run it by the wedding couple a month or so before the wedding. - Make sure it's something you're good at. If you do jazz improvisation on a saxophone, you might not be the best pick for "Here Comes the Bride" (Of course, you might just be the best pick!) - Make sure you have enough time to prepare. If you do this regularly, you may have songs, or...

Patong is Phuket's primary destination. It has all the trimmings: a beach, shopping, nightlife and restaurants. With all of this comes overcrowding and pesky hawkers, but if you can put up with the annoyances, Patong is a great place for a holiday. The long stretch of beach that runs parallel to the beach road is busy most days, especially during weekends and high season. Patong Beach is actually best enjoyed at night when there aren't many people around and there are no sun loungers or parasols. During the day, the beach doesn't look especially appealing. Swimming is possible at the beach in Patong. The water isn't the cleanest you'll find in Phuket, but there's nothing to stop you from taking a...

The piccolo is the highest pitched instrument in the woodwind family - and this same family includes the flute, clarinet, oboe, and saxophone. This underappreciated instrument is a whole octave above the flute. While it is sometimes used in high school bands and marching bands, most people do not truly study the piccolo until collegiate level. Even then, most people take a cursory note of this instrument, although people who stick with the training can become virtuosos. This instrument is highly sought after on professional levels - including but not limited to orchestras and studio musicians. The higher notes the piccolo can hit can be considered shrilly, so as a result the entire capabilities are...
