Playing Songs by Ear Improves Your Ability to Improvise
Sherri was a student at Anytown Junior High School. She signed up for jazz band because she thought it would be a fun adventure. She played well enough that her teacher decided to make her first chair alto saxophone in the jazz band. On the first day of class, they began rehearsing a tune called "Funking The Blues". When they reached letter F of the tune, all Sherri had on her part was 12 measures with chord symbols over the tops of the measures, slashes inside the measures, and repeat signs at both ends of the 12 measures. "What am I supposed to do?" she yelled out to her teacher, trying to be heard over the rhythm section. "Make something up!" was the response. "What do you mean 'make something up...

"The violin is stupid! Nobody plays the violin anymore! I don't want to play the violin! Violin is just not cool!" The parent of every violin student has probably heard most, if not all of those lines. I've heard . . . No, I've USED every one of those lines. I walked into the auditorium of a Fort Worth middle school and saw a man playing an instrument that looked vaguely familiar on the stage. The music was loud. The Led Zeppelin song being played had the kids bobbing their heads, clapping their hands and stomping their feet. Mark Wood is a rock n roll violinist. He and his brothers toured the Northeast United States playing Beethoven string quartets when Mark was young. After high school...
Wayman Tisdale - Power Forward - Jazz Music CD Review
The extremely talented Jazz artist Wayman Tisdale has released him most recent CD on the Mo Jazz recording label, entitled Power Forward. I wish it weren't the case but, it's not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can't force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Power Forward. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish. One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you've got one of Wayman Tisdale...

They need to have special music sheets that contain clarinet notes. It is straight in shape and resembles a clarinet, though curved models, resembling miniature alto saxophones, is also available. Today, clarinet sheet music is played in various styles of music - namely classical, jazz and gospel. Flute, piccolo, clarinet, oboe, horn, mouth organ, saxophone, and bassoon are some of the winds instruments, while the French horn, tuba, trumpet, and trombone are brass instruments. One problem I encountered for instance is the fact that I have very small...
